A Mount Morris native, Bumbarger was aware of the vaguely threatening comments that spread on Facebook in the lead up to the vigil, held in memory of George Floyd. It was with the thought of her year-old daughter at the forefront of her mind that Bumbarger ultimately decided to attend, scared though she was.
I would rather it be me doing something like this for everyone than it be my child on the side of the road. I felt like I had to do something.
Floyd, a black man, died May 25 in Minneapolis while in police custody. Two more protests are scheduled for Geneseo Tuesday afternoon.
Across the U. Murphy, who now lives in Rochester, recalled an incident in high school when he was ticketed for marijuana possession. Murphy said he had a good interaction with the police officer that cited him. Both men spoke of the importance of accepting personal responsibility and taking action to create positive change instead of just relying on others to do the right thing.
Molly King and Josh Marcks came to the vigil together. Marcks agreed and said people — especially white people — have a responsibility to try to change the way people of color are viewed and treated in this country. Bumbarger has four young children — ages 13, 10, eight and six. As part of that talk, Bumbarger said she instructed her two oldest never to retaliate and to call out for help when they need it.
Asked what it was like having that kind of conversation with her children, Bumbarger paused before answering. All I could really tell her was just to be prepared for it. I had to tell my kid to figure out a way to be OK with this.
Despite the state of things now, Bumbarger said she has hope for a better future. Things seems to be changing.
People are talking more and more loudly. I do have hope — abso-freaking-lutely. Participants were peaceful and appeared to draw supportive honks from many passing drivers, though some were less than supportive.
As the driver passed a second time, they blasted the National Anthem as sung by Whitney Houston, a black woman. The driver of a flat black hot rod was stopped by police after his third circuit around the block past the vigil, loudly revving his engine each time.
The male driver was released a short time later after a talking to by police. Organizer Lauren Berger called the vigil a success and said it fulfilled the purpose she hoped it would — that of people from different backgrounds coming together in the spirit of peace and justice, to honor a man who should still be alive.
As the County News ly reportedword of the vigil sparked the creation of a Facebook thread - since deleted - that included comments that appeared to convey a willingness to engage in violence.

Berger saw a silver lining in the experience, pointing out that the fear many felt for her, or in attending the vigil themselves, is an everyday experience for many in this country.
